Robert Eggers doesn’t do light movies. In “The Witch,” three children get murdered, including a baby. In “The Lighthouse,” insanity creeps into the form of mermaids, corpse-eating crows and masturbating sailors. In “Nosferatu,” a demonic sexual predator lusts for a young woman.
Yet, we’re supposed to believe that these films will be tame in comparison to what Eggers is concocting next. It was recently announced that Eggers will be shooting “Werewulf” later this year — the film is set for Christmas 2026 release via Focus Features. No plot details were revealed.
Eggers recently conducted a post-screening Q&A at the Lincoln Center, and spoke, for the first time, about “Werewulf.” He claims that he’s never written anything as dark as this film.
It's a medieval werewolf movie and this is the darkest thing I have ever written, by far.
Most recently, someone on Eggers’ sound team wrote on BlueSky social that he needed a hug after reading the script for “Werewulf.” Let the hype commence. It sounds like Eggers is once again succumbing to total and utter depravity with this next one.
