“Emilia Perez” leads with 13 nominations. That’s a record for the most-nominated non-English film at the Oscars. “Wicked” and “The Brutalist” followed with 10 each. All three films made the Best Picture field alongside “A Complete Unknown,” “Anora,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Nickel Boys,” “The Substance.”
‘Emilia’ is now tied for the second most nominations in Oscar history, the other films to also nab 13 noms were “Oppenheimer,” “Mary Poppins,” “Forrest Gump,” Gone with the Wind,” The Shape of Water,” and “LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring.”
However, the biggest surprise of the morning has got to be Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here” getting nominated for Best Picture. Wow. The film’s lead actress (Fernanda Torres) also made it in the Best Actress category. Brazil must be cheering loud this morning.
Salles’ film getting in, not to mention “Nickel Boys” landing a slot, meant that “A Real Pain,” “Sing Sing” and “September 5” were snubbed in the Best Picture category.
Congrats must also go out to Isabella Rossellini (“Conclave”) who has just five minutes of screentime in her film but managed to snag a Supporting Actress nom — the first Oscar nomination of her career. Better late than never. Her best work is still in David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet,” unrecognized by the academy at the time.
Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice”) was nominated in Best Actor for his excellent turn as Donald Trump. This also meant that Daniel Craig (“Queer”) was ignored, bumped out of the category in favor of Stan.
Denis Villeneuve (“Dune: Part Two”) was again snubbed in the Best Director category. He can’t seem to catch a break with the academy. Ditto Edward Berger (“Conclave”) again snubbed, and putting his film at risk of now not winning Best Picture.
Instead, and much-deserved, Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) got into the final five in Best Director. In fact, speaking of “The Substance,” smashed the Oscar horror ceiling by claiming noms in multiple categories including Picture, Director, Actress (Demi Moore), and Screenplay. Fargeat thus becomes the ninth woman in history to be nominated for Best Director, and the sixth in the last 8 years.
Other notable acting snubs included Angelina Jolie (“Maria”), Denzel Washington (“Gladiator II”), Margaret Qualley (“The Substance”), Pamela Anderson (“The Last Showgirl”), Jamie Lee Curtis (“The Last Showgirl”), and Clarence Maclin (“Sing Sing”).
The Academy aren’t fans either of “Challengers.” No nominations for Luca Guadagnino’s acclaimed tennis drama. Not even for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ incredible score. What gives?
