UPDATE: The latest rumor is that Guadagnino might be teaming up with his “Challengers” and “Queer” screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes for the DCU’s “Sgt. Rock”. The film is expected to be a period piece set during World War II.
EARLIER: Over the past few months, Luca Guadagnino (“Challengers”) is rumored to have been in talks to direct a movie within Peter Safran and James Gunn’s DCU (via TheInSneider).
After hearing rumors, for many months, Sneider had the Guadagnino discussions confirmed to him, by several sources, while also cautioning that it was unclear whether it had to do with a movie or TV series.
DC Studios bosses, James Gunn and Peter Safran, have been meeting with plenty of filmmakers these last few months, and it’s still unclear what project has piqued Guadagnino’s interest. However, talks between both parties have been going on for quite some time, an indication that Guadagnino might be seriously considering this jump to the DCU.
Guadagnino is said to be high up on Gunn and Safran’s list, and speculation as to what project might best suit Guadagnino’s style of filmmaking is ongoing, but a few potential titles currently without a director attached include “The Authority,” which features a gay romance, a Guadagnino specialty, and “Teen Titans”.
In the meantime, Gunn/Safran keep piling up the projects, and filmmakers, over at the DCU. There’s Gunn’s “Superman,” Craig Gillespie’s “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” James Mangold’s “Swamp Thing,” Andy Muschietti’s “The Brave and the Bold,” Matt Reeves’ “The Batman: Part II,” and, potentially rumored, Darren Aronofsky’s “Plastic Man.”
Guadagnino recently wrapped “After the Hunt,” starring Julia Roberts, and the next film he’s supposed to be shooting is “Separate Rooms,” starring Josh O’Connor and Lea Seydoux.
