David Cronenberg's “The Shrouds” has finally received U.S. distribution, courtesy of Janus Films and Sideshow, with a spring 2025 release planned.
This latest acquisition comes almost five months since Cronenberg’s film had its Cannes debut. “The Shrouds” screened at TIFF, and reactions, more or less, parallel those from Cannes. It’s set to screen at NYFF in a few weeks’ time.
Yes, Cronenberg’s film was met with lukewarm reviews — I was underwhelmed by it as well— although it does seem to be loved by a small contingent of fans. “The Shrouds” has a 57 on Metacritic and 64% on Rotten Tomatoes. Janus and Sideshow no doubt acquired it for a small sum of money.
As it stands, there are only six Cannes 2024 competition titles left without U.S. distribution: Emanuel Parvu’s “Three Kilometers to the End of the World,” Christophe Honore’s “Marcello Mio,” Krill Serebrenikkov’s “Limonov,” Michel Hazanavicius’ “The Most Precious of Cargoes,” Gilles Lelouche’s “Beating Hearts,” and Karim Ainouz’s “Motel Destino.”
