Here’s some semi-concerning news about Matt Reeves’ “The Batman: Part II,” which is supposed to be shooting in early 2025. Reeves tells Collider that DP Greig Fraser’s presence on the sequel remains a question mark.
I certainly hope that the timing will work out for that, but I actually don’t know. We're not to the place where we know that yet. I hope that's the case because I just love working with him.
This would be a major blow for the sequel because, quite frankly, Fraser’s photography was the best part of the film. Some of the images he concocted in the 2022 ‘Batman’, heavily inspired by film noir, were stunning to look at.
A major fan of Fraser’s work in ‘The Batman’ was Roger Deakins, who claimed that it was the best cinematography of 2022 and not only deserved to be Oscar-nominated, but should have won the golden statuette.
“It’s “The Batman.” That’s the best work [of 2022'] in my view,” he proclaimed, heaping praise on Fraser’s “extraordinary” work in Reeves’ film.
“The reason it wasn’t [nominated] is pure and simple: snobbery. There’s this unfair tendency to avoid the Marvel universe and the other popular universes,” Deakins said at the time.
If Reeves isn’t available to shoot ‘The Batman 2’ then how about Deakins step in to replace him? As far as I know, Deakins isn’t attached to any project at the moment, except for, maybe, Sam Mendes’ ‘Beatles’ movies which are only supposed to start production in July 2025.
As mentioned, Reeves is supposed to shoot the sequel early next year. Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis and, potentially, Barry Keoghan as Joker are set to join the cast.
