UPDATE: Josh Brolin has finally decided to turn down the lead role offered to him for HBO’s “Lanterns,” which is being described as having “gritty True Detective vibes.” The search continues. Ewan McGregor and Matthew McConaughey are now rumored to be the frontrunners.
EARLIER: Josh Brolin has been offered the role of Hal Jordan in HBO’s big-budget “Lanterns” limited series, which might follow in the same adult-oriented comic book footsteps as their “Watchmen” adaptation.
Brolin’s team has yet to respond to the offer, which had been sent out on Friday by DC Studio bosses Peter Safran and James Gunn (via TheInSneider). It’ll be interesting to see if the usually picky Brolin ends up accepting the offer.
“Lanterns” will tackle two intergalactic cops (Hal Jordan and John Stewart) investigating a murder in the American heartland. Nathan Fillion is set to co-star in the series as Guy Gardner. No word yet on whether Gardner or Jordan will be portraying the Green Lantern as both characters have done so in the comics.
Damon Lindelof (‘Watchmen”) will be an executive producer on the show. Chris Mundy (“Ozark”) serves as the showrunner. Stephen Williams (“Chevalier”) is being eyed as a possible director, he worked with Lindelof on “Watchmen” and had directed episodes of “Lost,” “The Walking Dead”, “The Last of Us” and |Westworld.”
