Confirmed: David Fincher Attached to Direct ‘Rope’ Remake [Updated]

UPDATE: What’s on Netflix’s Kasey Moore has seemingly confirmed to me that this project does indeed exist. I had it confirmed by another source soon after. Denzel Washington is potentially attached to star.

EARLIER: I’ve been holding off on this rumor since I arrived in Toronto, more than a week ago. I just couldn’t corroborate it and Netflix has refused to comment on it. That is why I’ve stamped a big fat “RUMOR” tag on the title.

With that said, I’ve been told that David Fincher has scratched off his remake of “Strangers on a Train,” which was once supposed to star Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck, for another Hitchcock remake.

I love 1948’s “Rope,” which is top 10 Hitchcock in my books, and Fincher seems as enamored by it since he’s apparently going to be remaking it, with Charlize Theron set to star in one of the lead roles. Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”) is said to have written a draft of the script.

“Rope,” one of the seminal MacGuffin movies, tackled two men try to convince themselves they've committed the perfect murder by hosting a dinner party after strangling a former classmate to death. The film starred Starring James Stewart, John Dall and Farley Granger,

What’s on Netflix previously reported that Fincher has at least four projects in development at Netflix: “Squid Game: America,” his Robert Towne penned “Chinatown” prequel, “Bitterroot,” and “an untitled crime thriller.”

If this latest rumor is to be believed, then the “untitled crime thriller” is “Rope.”

Fincher is coming off last year’s “The Killer,” starring Michael Fassbender, which was his ode to Melville’s “Le Samourai.” Much to the chagrin of some, he recently extended his contract with Netflix until 2027.
