Angelina Jolie’s latest directorial effort, “Without Blood,” starring Salma Hayek, world premiered at TIFF yesterday and is still without good reviews. The film tells a parable-like story set in the aftermath of an unspecified conflict, exploring themes of family, war, and revenge.
Outright pans are coming in from The Playlist (C-), IndieWire (C), The Guardian (2/5) THR, The Wrap and The Daily Beast. Its RT score is currently at 0% … “Without Blood” is now a problem for Fremantle, which had signed Jolie to a three-picture deal to direct her own movies with the studio.
Jolie is not a great director, we get that, but I still maintain she delivered a good film in 2014’s “Unbroken.” The rest of her directorial efforts? Not good. “By the Sea,” “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” and “First They Killed My Father” are all practically unwatchable.
Good thing Jolie also has Pablo Larrain’s “Maria,” coming up this fall, where she stars as opera singer Maria Callas. She’s getting Oscar buzz for her work in the film.
