Long range forecasting for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” is in, and it’s currently looking at a 3-day opening anywhere between $4M-$8M, which would be a terrible number for the $120M costing epic.
I don’t necessarily blame this on the bad press Coppola has been receiving from the trades, not to mention the botched trailer, but more so on the mixed reviews and the fact that Coppola and his team have been financing the marketing for this film, having spent around $20M on it.
After the last trailer was pulled down for fabricating critics quotes, we’re still waiting on a new one to be released. Can't they just re-upload the trailer without the intro with the fake reviews? Apparently, the trailer with all of the fabricated quotes is still playing before theatrical showings of “The Crow.”
At least “Megalopolis” has a poster, albeit a very weird one that has Adam Driver holding some type of weapon that looks like a cross between a golden hammer and a lightsaber.
I’m also wondering what’s going on with the Mike Figgis-directed behind-the-scenes documentary on the film, titled “MegaDoc”. That could be as interesting a watch, if not more so, than the actual film itself. Earlier in the year, Figgis hinted that it would premiere at the fall fests, but it hasn’t been announced anywhere.
Ever since its polarizing Cannes premiere, “Megalopolis” has only screened in Australia. It’s set to have its North American premiere at TIFF in late September, but in an unusual turn of events, and potentially a first for TIFF, there will be no press screenings for the film.
“Megalopolis” is set to be released in theaters on September 27.
