Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie à Deux” might be headed to TIFF for its North American premiere. A schedule has leaked, and it lists a September 9 premiere in Toronto. There will apparently also be stops at other fall fests, including London (09.25) and New York (10.02). I could not confirm the veracity of the leak, so take this with a major grain of salt.
I can however confirm that Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” will be headed to TIFF. Will it be a world premiere? I’m hearing Telluride wants to screen it too. Still not confirmed, but also very likely are Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” Pedro Almodovar’s “The Room Next Door,” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer.”
I don’t think there’s ever been a year where TIFF has had this many late additions. If all of the above titles do in fact get added, then it’s a major win for Cameron Bailey and the Canadian festival. Their lineup gets locked on August 13, so expect everything to be announced before then.
As for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” it’s an interesting story. The film was locked for TIFF, but has mysteriously not shown up yet. Will it be a late addition? Has the recent Coppola controversy gotten TIFF to pull it out of its lineup? I’m just asking.
