Given the industry excitement surrounding RaMell Ross’ “Nickel Boys,” they could have probably chosen a better first image than the one that was released today — shown above.
Yes, buzz is high for “Nickel Boys,” which Telluride boss Julie Huntsinger is calling a “towering achievement.” The film will have its world premiere at Telluride this weekend and is set to open the 62nd New York Film Festival on September 27.
Last week, “Nickel Boys” had a preview screening at London’s Curzon Soho. Some rave reactions popped up on Letterboxd. This came on the same day Screen published a festival piece claiming that “Nickel Boys” was “ahead of the pack” in terms of buzzy fall titles.
The film is an adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel and stars Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson, Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
Here’s the synopsis:
“The film follows two boys whose close friendship helps sustain their hope even as the horrors mount around them at the Nickel Academy, which becomes a microcosm of American racism in the mid-20th century.”
This is Ross’ narrative debut. He previously hailed the poetic and visually stunning documentary ‘“Hale County This Morning.” Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures will release “Nickel Boys” in theaters on Friday, October 25.
