Fresh off buzzy roles in “The Banshees of Inisherin” and last year’s “Saltburn,” Barry Keoghan has now hopped onboard Netflix and Steven Knight’s “Peaky Blinders” movie.
Keoghan joins a stellar cast that already included Cillian Murphy, who is set reprise the role of Tommy Shelby, and Rebecca Ferguson as his co-star (via Deadline). Ferguson’s credits include roles in “Dune,” “Dune: Part II,” “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation,” and “Doctor Sleep.”
Similar to Ferguson, details of Keoghan’s role are being kept under wraps. They were both not part of the series, which tells me that Knight, and director Tom Harper, might be brewing something slightly different with their 2-hour movie version of the show. Knight had previously told Deadline that the story would be set during World War II.
The series was set in 1919, in the aftermath of WWI, Knight’s and tackled criminal gangs fighting for survival in a nation rocked by economic upheaval. The show focused on one of the most powerful gangs of the time, Peaky Blinders, run by returning war hero Thomas Shelby and his family.
Ever since its 2013 premiere, the show’s fanbase has grown at a slow but steady pace throughout its six-year run, with many fans discovering the show on Netflix. Knight has noted that the appeal in making a film out of the series came in wanting “Peaky Blinders” fans to watch it together in a theater.
The film is set to shoot in September. A 2025 launch on Netflix is being eyed for the film.
