A24’s unusual rollout of “Sing Sing” has been incredibly slow, to the point where almost seven weeks into its initial NY/LA release, the film is still only playing in less than 200 theaters nationwide.
“Sing Sing” has so far grossed $1.6M, paling in comparison to the $3.6M of its summer indie rival, “Didi,” which is currently screening in 435 theaters. What gives?

In case you’re unaware, Oscar pundits have fallen hard for “Sing Sing,” to the point where the “experts” have it as the current frontrunner to win Best Picture. I know, I know, it’s a little too early to even predict for Oscars, but you’d think that the one film many believe could win would have amassed a decent audience almost two months into its run.
The prison drama quietly premiered at TIFF last year. I wasn’t a fan of its Oscar-baitiness, but reviews have been very good (84 on Metacritic). You would never guess “Sing Sing” is currently in its seventh week of release given the relative lack of buzz from audiences.
“Sing Sing,” which stars Colman Domingo and Clarence Maclin, tells the story of an incarcerated theater troupe that puts on a play as part of a rehabilitation program. Greg Kwedar (“Jockey”) directed the film and co-wrote it with Clint Bentley.
The film is all about the healing power of art. It’s a social conscious drama, manufactured to tug at the heart strings, effectively taking a page out of “The Shawshank Redemption” and making the case for the incarcerated, but in instructive rather than poignant fashion.
