The marketing team behind “Megalopolis” clearly notice the polarizing reviews the film received at Cannes and decided to open the latest trailer with bad reviews of Francis Ford Coppola’s past films. The angle here is that Coppola is a misunderstood genius and we’ll be calling “Megalopolis” a “masterpiece” 20 years from now.
There is nothing conventional about “Megalopolis,” so it doesn’t come as a total surprise that we now have this eccentric trailer, narrated by Laurence Fishburne. The film’s dialogue is hidden from us. It’s all images and really just about Coppola and his legacy. I’ve never seen a trailer like this one before.
Lionsgate has decided to attach the “Megalopolis” trailer to this coming weekend’s theatrical screenings of “The Crow.” Coppola’s epic has not been screened anywhere since its Cannes debut in May. It’ll have a public showing at TIFF next month, but there will no press screenings for it. It’s set to be released theatrically on September 27.
