This has turned into such a colossal clusterf*ck for Coppola and Lionsgate. The studio has recalled its latest trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” which used fabricated quotes from famous film critics, some of them dead.
“Lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer for ‘Megalopolis,'” a Lionsgate spokesperson said in a statement provided to Variety. “We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process. We screwed up. We are sorry.”
All we want to know is who was actually responsible for writing and cutting the trailer? That’s all that matters. Whoever’s idea was it to fabricate quotes from Pauline Kael, Vincent Canby, Rex Reed, and Roger Ebert. It’s yet another face palm failure in the never-ending drama surrounding “Megalopolis.”
Then again, there is the possibility, however slight it may be, that, given the lack of P&A funds available to Coppola and his team, this was all just a big marketing ploy to get the film more attention. They say no press is bad press, and that could turn out to be the case here.
