Here’s and update regarding that Adam Sandler/Josh Safdie project.
At the premiere for his new Netflix comedy special, Sandler tells IndieWire that he’s hopeful about the project coming to fruition soon. “It’s something that we talked about today,” Sandler said. “It’s hopefully going to come back. It’s crazy, it’s a cool script, very long. Josh doesn’t stop working hard.”
Back in May, I was told that the film, despite rumors, was still happening. The project had been delayed by last year’s strikes as “a lot of the film was going to be shot during live baseball.” This means that Sandler/Safdie would probably have to wait until next April to shoot this one.
In July 2023, Benny Safdie confirmed earlier reports that he would not helm the baseball project with brother Josh, who is now set to direct it on his own. Despite the split, Benny will still be getting co-writing credit on the script.
The film, rumored to star Sandler, Ben Affleck, Steve Harvey, Megan Thee Stallion and Gael Garcia Bernal, had the potential to be a real banger. Here’s the synopsis I previously gathered:
Set in the world of high-end sports card collecting in the 1990s, a retired Baseball pitcher (Affleck) attempts a comeback as a sports memorabilia agent (Sandler) attempts to capitalize on his success. Megan Thee Stallion is said to play Affleck’s girlfriend.
The Safdies are coming off the two biggest films of their career, “Good Time” and “Uncut Gems.” Sandler delivered one of his greatest performances in the latter, right up there with his work in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk Love.”
The Safdies recently announced separate directorial projects, both sports biopics. Benny just completed production on “The Smashing Machine,” starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. Meanwhile, Josh is set to shoot “Marty Supreme” with Timothee Chalamet this fall. Both films are being produced by A24.
