This afternoon, Disney added two new untitled Marvel movies to their release calendar: July 23, 2027, and November 5, 2027.
In March 2019, Marvel Studios got back the film rights to X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool after Disney’s acquisition of Fox for $71.3 billion. More recently, Kevin Feige stated that the “Mutant era” was soon coming in the MCU, which means we’re going to be getting the X-Men reboot that’s long been awaited by fans.
Rafe Judkins and Michael Lesslie are in the mix to write the script. No filmmaker is attached, just yet. It was just last month that reports indicated Jordan Peele had met with Marvel to helm the reboot, but it doesn’t look like anything materialized out of that meeting.
Now, we have Production Weekly indicating a “late 2025” production start for ‘X-Men’, which seemingly verifies a previous report hinting at that same date. There are no details about characters, stories or actors for this next incarnation of the ‘X-Men,’ but I wouldn’t be surprised if we learn more details next week at D23.
There have been a lot of bad ‘X-Men’ movies: “X-Men: The Last Stand” (‘06), “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” (‘09), “X-Men: Apocalypse” (‘16), “Dark Phoenix” (‘19), “The New Mutants” (‘20) … Fox has been milking this franchise for a few decades now.
There have been four good movies released: “X2” (‘02), “X-Men: First Class” (‘11), “X-Men: Days of Future Past” (‘14) and “Logan” (‘17) — otherwise, this franchise has already had its day.
The last few clunkers in the franchise, especially “Dark Phoenix,” have led to no X-Men movie having been released in almost six years. A break had to be taken, but Disney is now about to reboot it.
Fox‘s “X-Men” films were their most bankable IP onscreen. Disney purchased 20th Century Fox and its entire library in 2019, so they’re now in charge of the characters and will most likely incorporate them into this latest MCU incarnation. There’s been rumors of Wolverine being recast, which means no more Hugh Jackman, big mistake.
