I rarely write about movie posters, unless they’re either god awful or gloriously great that attention must be paid to them. The one just released for Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” falls into the latter category.
I love the hand-drawn artwork, and it’s a major upgrade from the last one we got. Why can’t studios make more posters like these? This ‘Saturday Night’ one reminds me of that old Jack Davis drawing for “The Bad News Bears”. It’s an art style that was incorporated in many ‘70s and ‘80s posters (check out “Cannonball Run” and “Animal House”).
I remember someone calling it "Mad Magazine” style cartoon drawings. That’s basically what it was. No surprise then that Davis was one of the founding Mad cartoonists. Siskel & Ebert had a saying about these types of posters; “Be wary of big stars in little boxes.”
Of course, this all doesn’t mean squat in terms of the film’s quality. A positive for Reitman’s film is that it test-screened very well last month and will be having its world premiere at Telluride, right before it screens at TIFF on September 10.
