Brad Bird has been trying to get his passion project — the sci-fi noir “Ray Gunn” — off the ground for nearly 30 years now. Originally an Apple/Skydance movie, the $150M animated project has been plagued by delays and is now in limbo at Netflix.
Now, I don’t know if Bird will ever get to make that film, especially with Netflix cutting down costs on many of their future productions, but he’s about to take a break from it since Disney/Pixar have just announced that Bird is directing “The Incredibles 3.”
Currently a TBD release, “The Incredibles 3” will have a returning voice cast that includes Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Vowell, and Samuel L. Jackson. It should be noted that 2018’s “The Incredibles 2” was Pixar’s highest-grossing film until “Inside Out 2” dethroned it this summer, but it’s still in the top 5 of the all-time highest grossing animated films.
When Bird makes a good film, it’s really good. I’m talking “The Iron Giant,” “Ratatouille,” “The Incredibles,” and “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.” I would hope that making “The Incredibles 3,” and the inevitable success that comes with it, might finally convince Netflix to greenlight “Ray Gunn” into production.
