Obviously, acting in a Marvel movie isn’t Shakespeare. Far from it, especially when a lot of the action takes place in front of a green screen.
So, it comes as no surprise that Harrison Ford recently admitted, on camera, that acting in one of these movies is all about the paycheck. Of course, you might just brush his comments off as tongue in cheek humor, but don’t tell me there’s isn’t a little bit of truth sprinkled in his words.
As Ford himself so eloquently puts it, the process of transforming into the Red Hulk in the upcoming ‘Captain America 4’ involved “not caring” and “being an idiot for money." (via Variety)
Ford went on to describe the eccentric nature of acting in an MCU movie: "I’m just saying you have to do certain things that normally your mother would not want you to do — or your acting coach, if you had one."
It sounds like Ford has absolute respect and admiration for the MCU.
Have you noticed how many former, and current, Marvel actors are coming out of the woodwork and criticizing their acting experiences in Marvel movies? Even Anthony Mackie, Ford’s co-star in “Captain America: Brave New World,” recently acknowledged the lack of creative freedom an actor has in these movies.
In recent months, the likes of Anthony Hopkins, Christian Bale and Ray Winstone have also spoken negatively about acting in the MCU. Hopkins actually had the most amusing anecdote of his time spent in the ‘Thor’ movies, saying that he felt like it was “pointless acting” due to the green screen and CGI.
They put me in armor; they shoved a beard on me. Sit on the throne, shout a bit. If you’re sitting in front of a green screen, it’s pointless acting.
These thoughts parallel those of Christian Bale who described his experience on “Thor: Love and Thunder” as a “uselessly pitiful attempt” at the craft.
