We all saw this coming. Kevin Costner’s 3-hour Western, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One” will be available to watch at home as it is listed for VOD release on July 16. That’s only 19 days after its initial theatrical launch.
It’s worth noting that the most recurrent complaint when it comes to this film is that it felt more like a set-up, an introduction, for the next chapter which is set for theatrical release in August. This quick home release could very well be a way for Warner Bros to try to build an audience to get them interested in the upcoming entry.
The critical reception for ‘Horizon’ hasn’t been good. However, audience scores have been a tad more generous, with a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.1/10 on IMDb. I gather it’s a little too late for the second chapter to be sent straight to Max, so this $110M gamble will continue on for Costner who is still very much planning on shooting Chapters 3 & 4 this fall in Utah.
