Here’s what I wrote about the film on 07.02.24
Joseph Kosinski’s F1 movie is continuing to film at Formula One events. Fresh off the massive success of “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kosinski’s latest stars Brad Pitt, and is being produced by Apple.
A few weeks ago, Kosinski-Pitt’s film set up a release date, and Warner Bros. hopped onboard as distributor setting up a wide theatrical release that will include IMAX showings. The still-untitled movie will hit theaters on June 27, 2025. The deal with Warner Bros will guarantee a theatrical bow of at least 30 days, if not longer.
The film, which stars Pitt, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon and Tobias Menzies, follows a formula one driver (Pitt) coming out of retirement who both ends up mentoring a younger protégé (Idris), and taking his final stab at glory on the track as the younger driver’s teammate.
A recent Puck report from Scott Mendelson hinted that, most likely due to delays and reshoots, the film currently has a budget of well over $300 million.
With a budget that keeps spiking, it now needs to be this incredible commercial success. Apple/Warners are banking hard on European audiences, who are much more familiar with F1 than U.S. moviegoers, and will no doubt be seeing the trailer on Sunday during the race.
Before “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kosinski was mostly known for directing the Tom Cruise starring sci-fi film “Oblivion,” “Tron: Legacy” and “Only the Brave.” He’s now become one of the most sought-after blockbuster filmmakers in the industry.
