This was supposed to be the series set inside Arkham Asylum prison and taking place within Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” universe. It’s been revealed that it is no longer happening, Max has shelved it (via Variety).
We had some interest in this one because Antonio Campos (“Christine,” “The Devil All the Time”) was set to write, direct and be showrunner — I’m always curious about what he does next. However, Campos is no longer involved, and his version of the series has been nixed.
It’s now possible a different Arkham Asylum series will happen down the road, including one set within James Gunn’s DCU. But Campos’ version isn’t going to be it.
A rep for Max had no comment.
This isn’t the first time ‘Arkham’ has been delayed. Various writers and directors have been brought onto the series, dating back to 2020; Campos joined in 2022.
Originally, Terence Winter (“The Sopranos,” “The Wolf of Wall Street”) was meant to have creative control of the series, it was called “Gotham City P.D,” but he left in November 2020 over “creative differences.” Joe Barton (“Giri/Haji”) replaced him, but also left due to “creative differences.” Want to bet Campos’s exit has to do with that very same reason?
Reeves had described Campos’ ‘Arkham’ as a “horror movie.” Coincidentally, Reeves’ sequel to “The Batman” was also recently delayed until October 2026, back a full year from its prior release date.
