Steven Knight, who is also currently writing the next Rey ‘Star Wars’ movie, is hard at work on the film version of his mega popular series “Peaky Blinders.” He’s one of the best screenwriters around, so attention must always be paid to Knight.
We already know that Cillian Murphy is set reprise the role of Tommy Shelby in the “Peaky Blinders” feature film, being produced by Netflix, and now we can add Rebecca Ferguson as his co-star (via Deadline). Ferguson’s credits include roles in “Dune,” “Dune: Part II,” “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation,” and “Doctor Sleep.”
Details about Ferguson’s role are being kept under wraps. The film is set to shoot in September. A 2025 launch on Netflix is being eyed for the film.
Knight’s British gangster series recently ended its run after six seasons. Ever since its 2013 premiere, the show’s fanbase has grown at a slow but steady pace throughout its six-year run, with many fans discovering the show on Netflix. Knight has noted that the appeal in making a film out of the series came in wanting “Peaky Blinders” fans to watch it together in a theater.
Set in 1919, in the aftermath of the Great War, Knight’s show tackles criminal gangs fighting for survival in a nation rocked by economic upheaval. The show focuses on one of the most powerful gangs of the time, Peaky Blinders, run by returning war hero Thomas Shelby and his family.
“Peaky Blinders,” highly acclaimed by critics, is also one of the highest rated TV shows of all-time on IMDb with an 8.8 score. I’m personally not a fan of the series, but still curious to see how it translates as a 2-hour movie.
Meanwhile, Knight, who is the creator of “Peaky Blinders,” has built up a considerable filmography as one of the best and most talented screenwriters in the business, his credits include “Dirty Pretty Things,” “Locke,” “Eastern Promises” and “Spencer.”
