Here’s the second trailer for “Joker: Folie à Deux” — a $200 million R-rated movie musical that will be in Venice competition. The film’s runtime is 2 hours 19 minutes.
The just-released trailer continues to give off the impression that this will be a love story. Call it “Ha Ha Land,” if you’d like, but the sequel looks to be a very different beast than the 2019 film, while still maintaining the original’s crime elements.
I’m not sure if this will turn out to be a good film, but it looks beautifully shot. Director Todd Phillips is taking a major risk here by going for broke with the musical aspect and there’s the sense that a big chunk of the film will be dram scenarios. regardless, ‘Joker 2’ could very well turn out to be a hot mess, or a total home run.
The term “Folie à deux” is a real psychiatric syndrome in which delusional belief, and sometimes hallucinations, are "transmitted" from one individual to the another. It’s obvious who those two individuals will be here: Arthur (Joaquin Phoenix) and Harleen (Lady Gaga). These hallucinations will most likely result in the musical aspects of the film. A lot of the film will take place inside their heads.
A cut was shown earlier in the year, it featured 20+ songs, four of them were originals. Although there is a duet, most of them are sung by Lady Gaga. In the film, Gaga sings a reworked version of Dinah Washington’s “The Bitter Earth,” with new lyrics, and it’s said to be a major highlight.
“Joker” was a smash hit upon its release in 2019. It grossed over $1 billion. The film also won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Additionally, it was nominated for three Oscars, winning two, including Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.
“Joker 2: Folie à Deux” is set to be released in IMAX 70MM on October 4, 2024.
