Last December, I exclusively reported that ‘Top Gun 3’ was in the works, and that a 2025 shoot was being eyed. A summer 2026 release is what Paramount wants. Glen Powell has more or less just confirmed that.
Appearing on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, the “Top Gun: Maverick” star said that he is “holding a date” to begin production on the film’s currently untitled sequel.
“I mean, I have a date,” he said, before being asked if he could share more details. “Absolutely not,” Powell said.
The sequel will reunite Cruise with co-stars Miles Teller, and Glen Powell, as well as producers Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison. Joseph Kosinski, who is currently filming “Apex” with Brad Pitt, is expected to return for the sequel. The screenplay is being written by ‘Maverick’ co-writer Ehren Kruger.
Cruise is very busy these days. He’s currently still shooting ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ and production on that one will likely continue until the fall. Then there’s Cruise’s film with director Alejandro Gonzelez Iñárritu, which might be shot in early 2025. After that one wraps up, it sounds like the schedule is wide open for ‘Top Gun 3.’
It should be noted that Cruise’s remake of “The Gauntlet” is NOT happening. That’s what I heard from a reliable source.
“Top Gun: Maverick” grossed $1.4B dollars worldwide, and that’s without being released in China. It was a wildly popular cultural event that brought audiences back to theaters during the pandemic. To many, ‘Maverick’ was the perfect sequel and wrap up, and there was no "need" for a third film.
