Blumhouse’s planned Spawn movie has been in development hell for many years now, and there’s not been much of an update in a while. Today that all changed.
Jason Blum and Todd McFarlane have taken to social media to share an image hinting the film is indeed a go. At the very least, a new script has been written.
Blum and McFarlane have shared a photo showing the title page for a script titled “King Spawn”, written by Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman (“Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) & Scott Silver (“Joker”). Last year, Blum stated that he was eyeing a 2025 release for the film.
2025 is when Spawn is going to come out. I stand by that. I stand by that […] The update on Spawn is we're very close to having a script that we're all gonna feel great about. And once we have that, we'll attach a director and an actor, and we're gonna go make the movie.
At some point, McFarlane planned to direct the film. Jamie Foxx had been attached to play the title character. As it stands, the film currently has no director attached, and Foxx’s participation is a major question mark.
In the comic King Spawn, “one of the vilest creatures ever imprisoned in Hell is released back onto Earth, Spawn follows the clues right into a trap set just for him. But why does Kincaid want Spawn to ascend the throne of Hell, and what of the prophecy of the King Spawn?”‘
In 1997, a Spawn movie had been released to terrible reviews. The acting was ridiculous, Mark A.Z. Dippé’s direction was flat, and it was damn-near unwatchable. Blum and MacFarlane seem to believe they’ve finally found a way to bring the character back to the big screen.
Originally a human named Al Simmons, Spawn was cursed into the life of a Hellspawn after his deal to see his wife Wanda Blake one last time. He became a costumed warrior fighting against the forces of Hell and Heaven in order to protect the human world from the apocalyptic wars they were planning.
