Here’s the latest intel when it comes to Venice. The lineup is set to be announced tomorrow morning, bright and early, before most folks on the east coast wake up.
Germany’s Tom Tykwer (“Run Lola Run”) is still tinkering with his 3-hour “The Light” and has decided to skip Venice. No idea if we’ll even get to see the film appear at any fest this year.
Terrence Malick’s “The Way of the Wind” is sadly not going to premiere on the Lido. In all likelihood, we’re looking at a Cannes launch in 2025. The film looks to be ready, but Malick no doubt wants a Croisette premiere.
Athina Rachel Tsangari’s “Harvest,” Erik Poppe’s “Quisling - The Final Days” and Costa Gavras’ “The Last Breath” are headed to Venice, but the question still remains whether they are in competition — I would expect Gavras and Tsangari to be there.
Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The End” is finally going to Venice after all. Go figure. Meanwhile, Justin Kurzel’s “The Order” is definitely headed to the Lido, potentially in competition. Kurzel’s last film, 2021’s “Nitram,” premiered at Cannes.
A month ago, I spoke to a Venice programmer who had hoped to see Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Sister Mother Brother” in the lineup. The film wrapped production in May — it’s a possibility. This would be a big get for Venice head Alberto Barbera as Jarmusch was expected to wait it out until next year’s Cannes Film Festival.
I also haven’t heard anything about RaMell Moss’s “Nickel Boys” being tipped for Venice — it is definitely going to Telluride and New York, I’ll add the film to my predictions (below) since it seems to be turning into one of the hotter titles of the fall, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t show up come tomorrow morning’s announcement.
