The MCU’s “Spider-Man 4,” the follow-up to 2021’s mega successful “No Way Home,” is supposed to begin production this fall, in late September. However, Sony still doesn’t have a director attached for this one. It turns out, they don’t have a script ready either.
Marvel head Kevin Feige is telling io9 that work on “Spider-Man 4” has indeed begun, but they’re still waiting on a “draft” of the script to be delivered “soon.”
Amy [Pascal] and I are working on it. We have writers who are going to be delivering us a draft relatively soon.
Jon Watts, who helmed the first three Spideys, has graduated to making films with George Clooney and Brad Pitt (“Wolfs”). A sequel is already in the works. He was said not to be interested in coming back for ‘Spider-Man 4’, but I’m hearing that Feige and Marvel are still trying hard to get him to return for “one last hurrah.” I doubt it’ll work out for them.
For months, Justin Lin was one of the names said to be in contention, but he’s now directing another project, MGM/Amazon’s “Stakehorse”. He’s out of the running. Another rumored name was Drew Goddard (“Cabin in the Woods”), touted as another contender since January, but he’s now heavily involved in helming the next ‘Matrix’ film for Warner Bros.
Recently, a directing duo emerged as possibly contending to direct ‘Spider-Man 4.’ Last month, rumors started sparking online that directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (“Bad Boys: Ride or Die”) were in the running for the gig, with Fallah giving a no-comment response when asked, which only enhanced speculation.
I had previously reported that some of the other names being considered included John Francis Daley/ Jonathan Goldstein, Sam Raimi, and James Wan.
Tom Holland and Zendaya are set to return in their respective roles for “Spider-Man 4.” However, Feige better hurry up with this one. This fall shoot might be the only timeframe available in the near future. Zendaya’s 2025 schedule is practically booked as she’s set to shoot the final season of “Euphoria” from January to June and is rumored to shoot “Dune: Messiah” in August.
There’s still no release date set up for “Spider-Man 4”— possibly late 2025? The last instalment (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”) grossed a whopping $1.9B worldwide despite being released in 2021 during the pandemic.
