Here are our first look images of Edward Berger’s “Conclave,” which I wrote about yesterday — it’s set to premiere at Telluride. The film will tackle the papal conclave that elects Popes for the Catholic Church and is being dubbed a “thriller.”
“Conclave,” which wrapped production in March 2023, stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. Berger directs from a script written by Peter Straughan as an adaptation of Robert Harris’ bestselling novel of the same name.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate Ralph Fiennes — an indisputably great actor of the stage and screen. Fiennes hasn’t necessarily gotten his due over the years. He’s always been overshadowed by more prolific actors, but absolutely deserves to be up there with the greats of the last 30 years.
Maybe “Conclave” is finally Fiennes’ time to win an Oscar. Who knows. His filmography is filled with impressive work: “Schindler’s List,” “Quiz Show,” “Strange Days,” “The English Patient,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “In Bruges,” “The Red Dragon,” “Spider,” “The Constant Gardener,” “The Menu.”
“Conclave” is set to his theaters on November 1, via Focus Features.
