Oscar winning cinematographer Linus Sandgren (“La La Land”, “Saltburn”, “Babylon”) is lensing Jay Roach's “Oceans 11” Prequel with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling set to star. A recent rumor had the film starting production in September, but with the recent news that Robbie is pregnant, I presume shooting will be delayed.
The film is set to be directed by Jay Roach (“Meet the Parents”), The screenplay was penned by Carrie Solomon. No further cast details were revealed, but Robbie and Gosling — Ken and Barbie — will likely be a major box-office draw after their “Barbie” success.
Showbiz411’s Roger Friedman had previously reported that the film is titled “Oceans.” Gosling and Robbie will actually be playing the parents of Danny Ocean, the character played by George Clooney in “Ocean’s 11”.
In the film, the Oceans will teach son Danny and daughter Debbie (originally played by Sandra Bullock) how to steal from the rich. The film is being described as a “caper” set during the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix. It is also said to be an “epic love story/ adventure disguised as a heist” and is inspired by Hitchcock’s “To Catch A Thief” and “Notorious.”
Puck’s Matt Belloni had originally reported that the film would incorporate elements of the original Soderbergh-directed films and and that it would have the biggest budget of the franchise. Warner Bros clearly has a lot of confidence in this one being a big hit.
There is the slight possibility that Robbie’s character might be pregnant, and the baby bump might not delay production because of that, but I highly doubt it.
The most commercially successful, and the best, of the ‘Oceans’ films was always the first one. The first sequel, 2004’s “Ocean's Twelve”, was a hot meta mess, with the final film, 2007’s “Ocean's Thirteen,” going back to the commercial formula of the original.
Remember the all-female spin-off titled “Ocean's 8”? You’re not alone, people seem to have memory holed that one.
