Looks like “Inside Out 2” will finish at the top of the box-office for the third weekend in a row. The animated film grossed $11M on Thursday. That’s far ahead of the film in second place …
“A Quiet Place: Day One” (#2) exceeded expectations with $6M in previews. I’ve adjusted my projections, and this one might open in the $48-$52M range. That’s actually great for a film which only cost $67M to produce. Memo to Hollywood, this is how you do it.
That $6M is actually a franchise record for Thursday previews. The first film ($4.3M in previews) had a $50.2M opening weekend, while the second installment ($4.7M in previews) had a $47.5M opening. The first two films were directed John Krasinski, but he opted out in helming ‘Day One,’ replaced by “Pig” filmmaker Michael Sarnoski.
Good reviews will surely help ‘Quiet Place’, but they came very late as Paramount decided it was a good idea to break the review embargo on the day of Thursday previews. I’m still dumbfounded by that decision, especially since reviews have been mostly positive (85% on Rotten Tomatoes and 68 on Metacritic.
