For some reason, Paramount thought it was a good idea to slap a review embargo on “A Quiet Place: Day One” until the day Thursday previews are set to begin.
Yes, showings for the ‘Quiet Place’ spinoff begin this afternoon and with that the first reviews are finally starting to trickle in. The results, so far, have the film at 68 on Metacritic and 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I kept thinking “was this one really necesarry”? Sure, as you can tell by the reviews, it’s a watchable affair, but there’s no way the fresh thrills of the original, released in 2018, can ever feel new again. This franchise is now very much a novelty. It’s very hard to transcend creative restrictions when there’s a pretty clear blueprint involved in telling the story.
The latest tracking numbers have “A Quiet Place: Day One” opening with a $40-50M weekend. The budget for this one was actually just $67M, so Paramount might actually get their production money back after the film’s first four days of release (that’s counting international receipts as well).
