Some really bad vibes are brewing over this one. There have been plenty of outspoken people, for one reason or another, criticizing Rupert Sanders’ upcoming reboot of “The Crow.”
Back in March, Alex Proyas, director of the original film, slammed the reboot, claiming that it should have never gotten made. On Friday, a formerly attached writer on the project, who saw an early cut, called the film “horrible” and “unwatchable.” Now, we have the actual star of the film coming out and saying he doesn’t like the ending.
Yes, Bill Skarsgård, who plays the titular character, is expressing his disappointment after recently watching a cut of the film, which, he claims, is unsatisfying because it leaves the door open for a sequel (via Esquire). This interview is quite something, and, if you read between the lines, it’s clear the actor isn’t too excited about the finished product.
Skarsgård also opens up about the fact that now, two years after filming wrapped, he feels a certain distance from the project and can be frank about the movie. The author of the Esquire piece, Madison Vain, goes on to mention how “surprisingly candid” Skarsgård is about “The Crow”, but refuses to divulge any of the other criticisms the actor might have had about it.
Vain does mention that once their conversation goes from “The Crow” to another upcoming film Skarsgård stars in, Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu,” his face “visibly brightens”
This reboot of the 1994 cult classic “The Crow,” starring the late Brandon Lee, will be released on August 23. Skarsgård stars in the role of Eric Draven, which was made iconic by the late Brandon Lee in the original. He’s joined in the cast by singer FKA twigs and Danny Huston (“Yellowstone”). Sanders (“Snow White and the Huntsman”) is directing, from a screenplay by Oscar nominee Zach Baylin (“King Richard”).
Sanders’s reboot has been stamped with a hard R rating — it’s said to be very violent. I’ve already tackled my reservations about this film. A 3-minute trailer was released in March, via Lionsgate. It still didn’t really sell me on this one.
