It’s now very hard to imagine a world where ‘Bad Boys 5’ doesn’t get greenlit.
Sony‘s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” grossed $16M on Sunday. That’s a final weekend tally of $56M. The fourth instalment in the franchise, currently playing in 3,885 theaters, exceeded all expectations with a whopping $105M worldwide tally. These are massive numbers for an R-rated movie. There were a ton of walkups this weekend, as presales were hinting at a $40M opening. (via Deadline)
Demos, which change throughout the weekend, were 36% Black, 29% Hispanic and Latino, 20% Caucasian, 10% Asian, and 4% other. Men over 25 were dominant at 40% followed by women over 25 at 38%.
"Bad Boys: Ride or Die" scored a strong “A-” on CinemaScore, 5-Stars and 88% positive on Screen Engine and PostTrak. The audience for this movie were satisfied by what they saw. Critics? Not so much.
Most of all, this is a big win for Will Smith who is now firmly in the post-slap phase of his career. Yes, this is a franchise movie, but the narrative was that people might be turned off by Smith after his infamous Oscar moment. As far as we know, he doesn’t have any other projects lineup up, but his next big test might be the “I Am Legend” sequel, which is still being written by Akiva Goldsman.
