The summer movie season kicked off with David Leitch’s “The Fall Guy,” but it sadly underperformed with a $27.5 million three-day weekend. Obviously, we’ll wait and see if the film has some legs and could turn into a sudden hit, but I’m not holding my breath on that front.
With these types of numbers, it’s quite clear that the Ryan Gosling starring film might not turn into a franchise, or will it? According to Gosling, in an interview with FastCompany, a sequel has already been written and he’s ready to jump into it.
We already—I mean, we love these characters so much that we wanted to know, just for ourselves, what happens to Colt and [Emily Blunt’s character] Jody after the movie ends? What’s the next phase for them? And we know exactly what it is. So hopefully the audience wants to know, too.
He added, “The sequel sort of wrote itself. We already know [the story] intimately. We’re just hoping that people like this movie enough that we get to keep telling the story of these characters. We love them so much, and we love this world, and I feel confident that we can do it.”
Hey, anything is possible. As Gosling stated, the audience will decide whether or not we get a sequel. It does sound as though many did like the film — that ‘A-’ CinemaScore is a positive sign, but it takes much more than just audience scores to call any film a hit. Depending on what you read, the film cost anywhere between $130 - $150 million, so it has a long way to go before it can recoup and break even.
