Jerry Seinfeld’s “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story” has become one of the more peculiar curiosities of this year’s Netflix slate. The revolutionizing of the unhealthy American breakfast was depicted in the first trailer for Seinfeld's directorial debut.
As I mentioned earlier in the week, ‘Unfrosted’ was not screened for most critics. They had to wait until 2am on Friday to watch and review it, that’s when it dropped on Netflix. Suffice to say, the reactions are in and they’re not good. Unfrosted’ has a 39% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Yes, Seinfeld directed this one. The cast includes the comedian alongside Melissa McCarthy, Hugh Grant, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Christian Slater, Bill Burr, Dan Levy, James Marsden, Fred Armisen, and Maria Bakalova. Four writers are credited as having penned the screenplay.
The film tells the story of the breakfast battle between Kellogg's and Post that led to the birth of the frosted pastry, which is still being sold by the millions in grocery stores today shelves today.
“Unfrosted” takes place in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1963, where the two notorious cereal rivals are looking for a way to revolutionize how consumers start their day. After years of bland breakfasts, Kellogg's and Post peruse the world of pastries for their next big thing. What follows is a war that gets explosive, sometimes literally, as corporate ambition runs wild, betrayal runs rampant, and menacing milkmen enter the fray. Through plenty of research and experimentation with artificial ingredients, the team at Kellogg's hopes to win the race with dessert for breakfast, even as the company navigates its own internal chaos.
In a recent interview, Seinfeld described ‘Unfrosted’ as "a colorful, dumb, silly comedy.”
In November 2022, Seinfeld told media that Netflix executives were watching the final cut of the movie for the first time, with a projected release in early 2023. This did not materialize. The film, shot in February 2022, is finally available to stream on Netflix.
