Last fall, as his wonderful “The Boy and the Heron” was premiering, we learned that Hayao Miyazaki was not retiring and indeed working on a new film.
Some of the reviews for “The Boy and the Heron” were calling it his “swan song,” but get that thought out of your head immediately. Studio Ghibli VP Junichi Nishioka previously mentioned that it would not be Miyazaki’s final film. In fact, it turns out that Miyazaki is already hard at work at Ghibli offices with a new project.
His son, Goro Miyazaki, a director in his own right, tells Oricon (via ComicBook.com) that his dad’s currently working on something that is “looking like an action-adventure-type movie, nostalgic and reminiscent of the old days.”
Ever since his 1979 debut, “The Castle of Cagliostro,” Miyazaki has amazed us with the poetic surrealism of his films. Now 83, and newly unretired, he’s coming off “The Boy and the Heron” having become the biggest box office success of his career in the U.S ($47M) and worldwide ($173M).
