Netflix is close to acquiring North American and U.K. rights to Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez,” which premiered at Cannes last week. This is a major sell as it positions the streamer in contention for the Palme d’Or.
Just imagine if “Emilia Perez” wins the Palme, it would become the first film Netflix film to do so. There were worthier films in competition, although ‘Emilia Perez’ is very good, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Greta Gerwig led jury fell hard for this rambunctiously entertaining film.
Audiard’s musical, in Spanish, about a Mexican druglord who decides to transition into a woman, leaving his family behind and starting up a new life, has gotten fairly stellar reviews, so far — 70 on Metacritic and 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I’ll have more on what could win the Palme tomorrow, that’s when the final two films in competition screen: Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” and Michel Hazanivicius’ “Precious Cargoes.”
