Cannes is a place where I tend to get a lot of good scoops. Here’s some new intel regarding that Adam Sandler/Josh Safdie film that’s been heavily delayed.
I was told the film, still untitled, is definitely happening, and sooner than you think. It might be shooting within the next couple of months.
The project had been delayed by last year’s strikes as “a lot of the film was going to be shot during live baseball.” Benny Safdie is also still credited as having written the script with his brother. Expect a major update on this one very soon.
In July 2023, Benny Safdie had confirmed earlier reports that he would not co-direct the the film with brother Josh Safdie, who will be directing the Sandler film on his own. Despite their amicable split, they did co-write the screenplay.
The film, rumored to star Sandler, Ben Affleck, Steve Harvey, Megan Thee Stallion and Gael Garcia Bernal, could have been a real banger. Here’s the synopsis I had gathered:
Set in the world of high-end sports card collecting in the 1990s, a retired Baseball pitcher (Affleck) attempts a comeback as a sports memorabilia agent (Sandler) attempts to capitalize on his success. Megan Thee Stallion is said to play Affleck’s girlfriend.
The Safdies are coming off the two biggest films of their filmmaking career, “Good Time” and “Uncut Gems.” Sandler delivered one of his great performances in the latter, right up there with his work in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk Love.”
