The “Furiosa” screening just ended here at Cannes. The reviews are in. An 82 on Metacritic (based on 24 reviews) is pretty damn good. Positive takes are coming in from Deadline, IGN, Screen, The Guardian, IndieWire, Rolling Stone, Daily Beast, Telegraph, and Slash,
However, Furiosa is getting mixed reviews, from Variety, BBC, Collider, The Times, Time, NYT and THR. Many keep using the line it’s “no ‘Fury Road’.” Know what? They are right. “Furiosa” has some thrilling moments, and surely ranks in the top 3, as far as ‘Max’ movies go, but it is undeniably bloated. The runtime is a tad too excessive. With that said, it’s good.
Chris Hemsworth is the standout here — he steals every scene he’s in. Anya Taylor-Joy is, sadly, no Charlize Theron, but she gets the job done. The visuals are so unhinged and wild, and, at times, excessive. Some outstanding practical effects. The CGI is not as present as the trailer may have led you to believe.
Miller caught lightning in a bottle with “Fury Road.” There was no way “Furiosa” could top that one. There was barely any fat in ‘Fury Road’. Whereas, “Furiosa” has fat … I’m on my way to catch the next competition title, Magnus Von Horn’s “The Girl With the Needle.”
