Readers' Thoughts on ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' — “B" CinemaScore?!

May 11, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

The big movie this weekend is Wes Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.” Readers can now chime in with their thoughts on this entertaining addition to the ‘Apes’ franchise. It’s set to have a $55 million opening this weekend.

But what’s the deal with that “B” CinemaScore? That’s very low. Have audiences soured on the ‘Apes’ franchise? It currently has a 7.4/10 on IMDb and 80% RT user rating. Not too bad. Here’s THR trying to explain that low CinemaScore:

Insiders close to the film aren’t overly concerned about the CinemaScore, noting that 85 percent of moviegoers gave it an A or a B. This suggests that a vocal minority dragged down the overall score by giving it a C or lower.

Whatever the case, we can definitely call this a successful weekend for 20th Century and the entire ‘Apes’ team. Hey, the film even surprised me in how much I actually enjoyed it. It’s nothing groundbreaking, Matt Reeves is missed, but it’s entertaining and sets up, quite nicely, the inevitable trilogy to come.
