Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver – the writer-producer duo behind ‘Planet of the Apes,’ ‘Avatar’ and ‘Jurassic World’ – are telling THR that the ultimate plan is to make five more of these ‘Apes’ movies.
When Jaffa and Silver first came up with the idea, for the ‘Apes’ franchise, which started with 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” they envisioned nine movies. This wildly ambitious idea has worked so far with already four movies released. Here’s Jaffa:
I saw nine. I don’t know if we’ll make it to nine. I would love it. We’ve spoken to not just Wes and Josh and [producer] Joe Hartwick Jr., but to Steve Asbell and Scott Aversano at 20th about what these next movies can be.
When you get to watch ‘Kingdom,’ you’ll realize where, story-wise, this franchise is intended to go as its themes continue to evolve on-screen. Is there room for two intelligent species on this planet? That’s the main question being asked in ‘Kingdom.’
For now, a fifth film hasn’t been greenlit. It’ll all depend on how well ‘Kingdom’ does with audiences, but early projections are looking good for the film, which is turning into one of the more profitable and well-realized franchises in Hollywood.
