This is interesting. Wes Anderson’s “The Pheonician Scheme” is NOT being shot by his go-to DP Robert Yeoman. Instead, Bruno Delbonnel is the cinematographer in this one.
Yeoman, 73, has shot every live-action Anderson since the filmmaker’s 1996 debut, “Bottle Rocket.” It’s quite surprising he’s not part of ‘Phoenician,’ but having Delbonnel at the helm is, by many accounts, not a downgrade.
If you want a dream-like atmosphere then hire Delbonnel. The man loves his softly-lit frames. Manipulating soft light and color, he’s known to use a velvety contrast to emphasize his photography and colours on the characters rather than the darker lit backgrounds.
I loved Delbonnel’s work in “Amelie,” one of the great achievements of the art form, and not too far behind is his stunning work in Joel and Etan Coens’ “Inside Llewyn Davis.” It’ll be interesting to see how he adapts his style to Anderson’s obsessively detailed cinema.
