It’s no secret that, due to the strikes, this year will not be a strong one for U.S. cinema. With that said, some of the more anticipated films of 2024 include Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” and Steve McQueen’s “Blitz.”
There’s major buzz for “Blitz,” which, as of now, isn’t expected to premiere at Cannes, with a fall launch being eyed for McQueen’s WWII epic, possibly a premiere at Telluride.
However, the film is officially ready. McQueen has completed post-production work on it. It even has an MPA rating — rated PG-13 for "thematic elements including some racism, violence, some strong language, brief sexuality and smoking."
It should be noted that all of McQueen’s other films have had R ratings. This is his first PG-13 outing. He’s going Hollywood with this one.
“Blitz” wrapped shooting in London back in April of 2023. It had test screened in December, and I heard it was a finished cut. Word of mouth was very positive from the people I spoke to who attended the screening.
The film takes place during the German bombing campaign against the United Kingdom in 1940, with the events “seen through the eyes of the Londoners on the home front.” “Blitz” is said to be “sweeping” and “epic” filmmaking
With a resume that includes “Hunger,” “Lovers Rock,” “Shame” and “12 Years a Slave” it’s always exciting to get a new film from former-visual-artist-turned-director McQueen. “Blitz,” produced by Apple Studios, is the most expensive film of his career, stars Saoirse Ronan and Harris Dickinson and is based on an original idea by McQueen.
