In what can only be described as a stunning reversal of events, Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction, a major turning point in the #MeToo era, has been overturned by New York’s highest court.
It turns out prosecutors made some egregious “errors” and the Big Apple’s highest court ultimately determined that Weinstein didn’t get a “fair trial.” The court found that Weinstein's trial judge allowed prosecutors to call women to testify even though their accusations didn't specifically relate to any of Weinstein’s charges.
The four judges in the majority wrote that Mr. Weinstein was not tried solely on the crimes he was charged with, but instead for much of his past behavior.
However, Weinstein will remain imprisoned by being shipped to California for another rape conviction in a 2022 California trial that sentenced him to 16 years in prison — Weinstein is also appealing the California case. What if that one gets overturned as well? The odds are low, but nobody predicted today’s news out of New York either.
