Last September, I reported on intel that Sam Raimi was being eyed to direct “Avengers: Secret Wars” (2026) and that he might actually be Marvel’s top choice.
Daniel Richtman then echoed this story, two months later, by implying that Raimi was indeed one of the top contenders to helm ‘Secret Wars,’ and that he might actually be directing both ‘Avengers’ movies, set for 2026 and 2027.
Raimi is now explicitly saying, without hesitation, that he wants to direct the next ‘Avengers’ flick (via ScreenGeek). He says no formal offer has been given to him yet, but he tells the outlet “I hope they do.”
It was only a few months ago that director Destin Daniel Cretton dropped out of “Avengers: Kang Dynasty,” so it looks as though that one might also be Raimi’s for the taking. My message to Raimi is simple: DON’T TAKE THE OFFER. Marvel is toxic, you just turned 64, you don’t need this headache.
Raimi should instead stick to his current plan of shooting the horror-thriller “Send Help” and another untitled horror project he has planned for 2025. He’s too talented for Marvel. Raimi’s filmography includes “A Simple Plan,” “Spider-Man 2,” “Evil Dead,” “Drag Me To Hell” and “Darkman.”
Raimi isn’t the only director in contention to direct these ‘Avengers’ movies. I’ve also heard about Ryan Coogler and Jon Watts being in the running. Whoever gets the job would be succeeding Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of the previous two ‘Avengers’ (“Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”).
Last April, Raimi had already dipped his feet into the MCU, directing “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” — a lukewarm reaction soon followed from fans and critics alike. Raimi only came onboard that film after original director, Scott Derrickson, parted ways due to “creative differences.” The script had been rewritten many times at that point — an MCU actor claimed the film had 33 rewrites.
