UPDATE: Here’s another look at Guy Maddin’s “Rumors,” which is set to premiere, out of competition, at the Cannes Film Festival. What a surreal image. Ari Aster, an exec producer on the film, tells Deadline that the film is “stoopid and hilarious and wonderful.”
EARLIER: Guy Maddin’s “Rumours,” which Bleecker Street is backing, has set up a fall 2024 release. We also have our first image of the film, which can be seen above. It certainly has that unique Maddin look to it.
Last September, I exclusively reported that Maddin was going to be shooting a new film titled “Rumours,” and it ended up starting production the following month. Afterwards, we learned that Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander were set to star in the film, and our expectations instantly went up.
“Rumours” is being billed as a “comedy” (although that might be a very loose term considering that this is Maddin we’re talking about here). Blanchett is one of the great actresses of her era and anything she does must be paid attention to. Vikander is a wonderful actress as well.
“Rumors” concerns the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest liberal democracies at the annual G7 summit after they become lost in the woods and face increasing peril while attempting to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis
Maddin, an ultra-surrealist, and the man behind “The Saddest Music In The World” and “My Winnipeg,” among others, is one of the most eccentric filmmakers out there. His last dreamily realized film was 2017’s “The Green Fog.”
