On April 5th, “Sugar,” starring Colin Farrell, will premiere on Apple TV. We now have our first trailer of the private detective story which is a limited series composed of eight episodes. Here’s the synopsis, via Apple:
A contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture, and television history: the private detective story. Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.
The series, set in Los Angeles, was created by Mark Protosevich. This is Protosevich’s first foray into television, he’s primarily known as the screenwriter behind “The Cell,” “I Am Legend,” and Spike Lee’s “Oldboy” remake. Judging by the trailer, the series has a lot of noir tropes, and will be wholly embracing the style of that genre.
More intriguingly, Brazillian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles directed the entire series. He’s best known for “City of God,” “The Constant Gardner,” and “The Two Popes.” Expect some real style in “Sugar” given Meireilles’ penchant for flashy camerawork.
Besides Farrell, the cast also includes Kirby Howell Baptiste, Amy Ryan, James Cromwell, Anna Gunn, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry and Sydney Chandler. As mentioned, “Sugar” will be available on Apple TV exactly a month from now.
