Director Zack Snyder’s sci-fi epic “Rebel Moon” premiered on Netflix last December, and we’re also getting the sequel, “Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver,” in April, but that’s not all folks.
There’s a director’s cut coming, and it sounds much more insanely conceived than previously thought. In a new interview with I Minutemen, (via The Playlist). Snyder warns us to expect a 6-hour version of ‘Rebel Moon’ …
“Those will come out, probably, on the same day – later,” Snyder told the YouTube channel. “We don’t have a date yet, but I think it’s going to be in the summer.”
“They’re each about an hour longer than the originals, the PG-13 [versions]. So it’ll be nice to see the six hours together,” he continued. “You can take a break, of course. It’s a more, maybe, immersive experience. I’m interested for people to see it that way. It’s very adult, it’s very R-rated.”
There is, supposedly, according to Snyder, a lot of sex and violence in the R-rated versions and this all stems from his deal with Netflix that he can have a director’s cut released, at his own choosing, after the PG-13 cuts are unveiled.
Much like many of his films, Snyder’s “Rebel Moon - Part 1: A Child of Fire” bombed hard with critics — the most recent tally has it at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes and 31 on Metacritic. I doubt a director’s cut will turn it into a good film. I recently, finally, watched Part 1 and it was a torturous experience.
There are plenty of Zack Snyder fans out there — they are loud and vocal about their admiration for the “Justice League” filmmaker. “Rebel Moon” was made for them. Sadly, I’m not one of his admirers. I found things to like about “Watchmen” and his “Dawn of the Dead” remake, but not enough to convert me to his church of moviegoing.
One of those superfans is noted National Review critic Armond White, who hasn’t been shy in his unadorned, and very vocal, fandom for Snyder’s films, calling him the best living mainstream filmmaker. In his review, White says ‘Rebel Moon’ is “cinematic poetry.” Do any of our readers actually agree with this? Does anybody actually like ‘Rebel Moon’?
